Different Ways to Save on Car Expenses

The following is a guest post on behalf of Cheap Car Insurance.

When you think of saving on car expenses, you first think of
insurance. Finding the best insurance for your cost is one way to
save, but it’s not the only way you can save money where your vehicle
is concerned. There are a lot of little ways that can add up.

You can start saving money when you buy your car by financing for a
fewer number of years. You can save hundreds or even thousands of
dollars in interest. Another way you can save money on your purchase
is by being a member of AAA. If you buy from a participating dealer,
you can save money on the purchase price of a new or used car. Buying
a certified used car can save you money over buying a brand new car.
They have low mileage and still have part of their original warranty
in effect. You also cut down on the depreciation of getting a new car.

Buy the smallest size car you need and you can save money on buying
fuel. Look for vehicles that have better mileage, even considering a
hybrid. Don’t spend extra money on options that you will seldom use.

Regular maintenance can save you from making major repairs down the
line. Oil changes at the recommended times and other preventative care
can help your car last longer without replacing expensive parts.
Rotating tires and getting alignments when needed are important
maintenance, especially after winter when road damage from salt and
chemicals can knock out your car’s alignment. This will make your
tires last longer which can save you more money. Making sure they have
the correct amount of tire pressure will also save money. Taking care
of your tires and engine can save you a few hundred dollars each year.

Changing the air filter will make your car run smoother and use less
fuel. Check your fluid levels to make sure they are where they’re
supposed to be. Don’t use expensive gas and oil for your car; it’s a
waste of money. Use only what is recommended by the dealer.

Another way you can save money that you might not think about ahead of
time is changing your driviing behavior. Avoid speeding and parking
tickets. Those costs are car expenses that can be avoided. Driving the
speed limit will save on gas and sudden bursts of speed can reduce
your fuel consumption drastically. Combine trips to the store and to
run errands to save on gas.

Car insurance is a great way to save money on car expenses. Not just
in comparison shopping for cheap car insurance, but
consider what you might save if you combine your car insurance with
home insurance.

Most of the things you do to save money on car expenses will seem
small but if you add them up, they can make a big difference.

  • One of the most overlooked part of saving money with cars is the driver behavior. I do all the other things routinely, but I have a bit of a lead foot. This will prevent me from maximizing my mpg.

    • Ha, yes it will krantcents! You should coast as much as possible and see what kind of difference it makes. Maybe once you see the savings, that lead foot will morph into a feather! :)
