Monthly Earnings Report: September 2011

Do you ever wonder how much money this site makes per month? And, how does it generate the income? Where does it come from? All your questions will be answered in this post.

As expected, my first couple of earnings reports were a big hit (I started doing this in April). Not only is it of great interest for my blogging friends, but I also believe that my readers have a right to know how this site is being funded. So, with no further ado, here’s the earnings report for September, 2011.

September 2011 Earnings Report

Yes, yes, I know. It looks like my earnings fell off a cliff, but I’m not worried. August was just an insanely good month, and it makes my September look like I only made pennies. But, I would say an extra $1,000 in a month is nothing to sneeze at.

Breakdown of Earnings: September 2011

Adsense – $41.40

Staff Writing – $25

Link Ads/Widgets – $75

Sponsored Posts – $920

Affiliate Sales – $0

Total September 2011 Income: $1,061.40!

Adsense – My AdSense earnings picked up again in the month of September. I did not take any time to optimize the ads, but I definitely increased my traffic, which allowed me to add an extra $15 or so to this month’s total compared to last month.

Staff Writing – September has been crazy busy. My wife and I are still working on our house (in fact, right after I write this, I’m going to saw into our bathroom wall to replace some rotten sub-floor). Before the month started, I informed the appropriate site owners that I would not be able to keep up with my regular postings.

As it turns out, I was actually only able to write one article and was paid $25. So, it’s probably a good thing that I warned them all of my time constraints.

Link Ads/Widgets – I have not been on the hunt for more paid links lately. I’d rather keep them to a minimum on my site because they really reduce the reader’s experience. There are a few link deals that are expiring this month, but until I remove them from my site, I really don’t have much interest in adding any more. For this reason, my link income is $0 and I’m fine with that. I hope you’ve enjoyed a nearly link-free experience! 🙂

Sponsored Posts – this is where guest writers (typically advertising an online location or a post) will pay to have their article put on my site. In the month of September, I have agreed (through different companies of course) to post 11 sponsored posts for $920. Some of these will be activated later this year, but the payment came immediately, so I counted the earnings in September.

Affiliate Sales – I have not made any iPage referrals this month, mainly because I have not informed my readers of their service. Soon, you’ll see a “References” page where I will display all of the products that I use in order to make my site profitable. Hopefully I’ll be able to get this up and running by the end of October. I think that it could make a huge difference in my earnings.

Last month I mentioned that I figured things would slow down in September. Unfortunately, I was right. No big deal though. I still have a bunch of ideas for making online revenue in the future. It’s just a matter of finding the time to do them all!

I am still very excited about the future and can’t wait to see what it will bring. October is already looking like a promising month, so stay tuned for how I make my earnings this month!

  1. How do you go about getting sponsored posts on your site? That’s something I would love to do with my wife’s parenting blog.

    • Honestly, most companies find me through my “Contact” tab on the top of my page. They often seek out sites that are similar to their product – for me it would be something to do with credit, insurance, or something like that. It’s best if you start writing guest posts on other larger sites that are like yours. Then the companies seem to just find you. If you want some more info, you can always email me through my “Contact” page as well. 🙂

  2. Still a great month by all means. Keep up the great work and I am sure that it will continue to improve.

    • Thanks 20’s Finances. I’m sure it will improve too! I have many plans for new income streams in the future. 🙂

  3. I’ll take 1k any day (or month). Congrats

    • Yep. That’s what I say!

  4. So i guess the sponsored posts are mostly promotional content? Do you have any say in what they can publish?

    • Typically, it’s not promotional content – it’s valid content with a paid link. For example, one of my recent sponsored posts was about saving money, but the link was for motorcycle insurance, which was just worked into one sentance of the article. Most people have no idea it’s a sponsored post.

  5. Still a great month, nonetheless. My Sept. looks about the same. Good extra income but not as good as Aug.

I have a feeling Oct is going to be great though, I’ve already seen a pop in traffic with the new URL. I’m excited to see how the month goes!

    • I’m excited to hear that you have a boost in traffic! I also suspect that October will be slightly bigger. I have deals in the works for about $500 so far. So, I wouldn’t think that $1,500+ would be out of the question.

    • August WAS amazing and was pretty tough to live up to! I bet I can get there again, but it might take a little bit of work.

  6. Looks like you are still doing quite well Derek. I am very happy for you. I hoping to get this kind of income stream going for myself. Best of luck with the house stuff this month.

    • Thanks for the well-wishes! We’ll see what comes in the future. Good luck to you and your ventures as well!

  7. Congratulations. $1,000 from a side gig blog is not bad. The best part about is that you are not having to hunt for your largest revenue stream. Any more / different plans on focusing more on passive income opportunities like Adsense?

    • Yep. $1,000 is still quite alright with me! I do have plans for the future. One of which is an eBook, and I have some other website ideas. I have thought about getting into App creation, but I haven’t had any genius ideas yet. Any advice for more passive income? I know you’ve got ideas spewing out every second!

  8. Man, you are working through it. That’s awesome. I love these kinds of posts. I’m going to take a few lessons from your site.

    • They are your favorite!? Mine too! I love writing about my progress on this site! Hopefully there will be big numbers in the future! 🙂
