How Power in Numbers Can Help You Grow Your Business Online

“There is power in numbers and there is power in unity.”Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The meaning behind this phrase is that a group of people have greater power and influence than a single individual. We can find this same message referring to strength in numbers in the Bible, (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12) which expresses that two are better than one.

But what does this phrase really mean, and how in the world can you benefit from it? Let me tell you, I take this short phrase very seriously, especially when it comes to my livelihood in the present, as well as in the future. If I paid absolutely no attention to it, I’d probably be making minimum wage somewhere, and I’d have no hope of improving my financial situation in the future.

Power in Numbers

Let’s start out with a very simple example. Let’s say that a local factory is dumping waste into a nearby river, and it will eventually ruin any and all life that is currently present in the stream. Rather than being a bystander, you decide that you’re going to raise your voice and do something about it!

For the next two weeks, you sit outside the gates of the company and waive your signs that say, “Stop polluting our river!” and “Your waste is a disgrace!”. This sounds all well and good, but there’s just one problem….. you are protesting alone. There is no one backing you up. As a single unit, you are basically powerless.

What if the scenario were changed? What if all of your rallying had an impact? What if all of the sudden you had 5 friends that protested in front of those factory gates? What if it were 10? 20? 100? 1,000? Can you feel the power growing?! I can. As the number of people increase in front of that factory, the power is increasing as well. That factory does not want to lose the business of 1,000 customers, so they decide to change their ways and get rid of their waste in a more proper manner.

By using the power of numbers, you just saved your river!

There is Power in Numbers Online

It’s pretty safe to say that the Internet has severely impacted the world we live in today. What once took weeks, now only takes a few seconds. The once impossible task can now by done with an App on your phone. Each passing day yields endless possibilities – all because of this “interconnectedness” called the Internet.

This new sensation also changed the way that the power of numbers was viewed. A group of people were no longer banded together in a physical location; however, droves of ordinary citizens were purchasing personal computers and creating a presence online.

Suddenly, a new market was born, and advertisers knew that they had to capitalize on this new medium, but how?

Advertising Today

It took quite a few years for advertisers to get a handle on this new online market, but it has quickly turned into a strategy that’s all too familiar, “Those that have the numbers have the power.”

If you have a website that attracts hundreds of people each day, advertisers will be “knocking at your door” (actually, they’ll be filling up your inbox), hoping that they can place an ad on your site. After all, it’s a guarantee that all of your visitors will see this ad, which means that many of them will click on it, and quite a few of them will actually buy the product that’s for sale!

And, what if, instead of hundreds of visitors each day, your site attracts 1,000 visitors? 2,000? 5,000? 20,000? 100,000? I know that you most definitely are feeling the growing power in these numbers. Today, more-so than ever before, extreme wealth can be created online, all because there is power in numbers.

Do you have an idea that could attract thousands of readers? If so, act now!

My name is Derek, and I have my Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University. After graduation, I was not able to find a job that fully utilized my degree, but I still had a passion for Finance! So, I decided to focus my passion in the stock market. I studied Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and Income Statements, put some money into the market and saw a good return on my investment. As satisfying as this was, I still felt that something was missing. I have a passion for Finance, but I also have a passion for people. If you have a willingness to learn, I will continue to teach.

  1. Very true and very inspirational Derek. It’s power in numbers in so many ways. I have a friend that says if he asks out 100 women 2 say yes. Another friend who used to be a promotor used to lie about how packed his parties were in order to gain more respect. And lastly, I am a photographer for a real estate agent who says if he sends out 1000 flyers to knew prospects every quarter he will become a millionaire faster than if he just did his occasional deal.

    • The bigger the number, the greater the chance for success! Remember that, and you’ll go far with everything you do.

  2. Love this post and it could not be truer! It has always been a number game and always will be however new technology adds new dimensions to numbers that have never existed before………….how AWESOME is that?

    • It really is awesome! With newer technology, the potential numbers are getting bigger and bigger! I mean, look at Facebook! It practically has every single person on the Earth looking at it. And, for that reason, it’s worth $100 billion. Crazy.

  3. Derek, as a new Yakezie challenger, I can definitely attest to the power of the group. After reading many success stories, I am taking the plunge.

I hope one day to do something that thousands of people respond to.

    • Awesome John! I like your site name and can’t wait to read some of your stuff. Good luck with the Yakezie challenge! If you have thousands of comments on your posts someday, I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to give up your day job – just letting you know. 😉

  4. I completely agree. Advertisers flock to where the crowds are, and I feel that it is easier to gather crowds and make people pay attention than before. I mean look at what type of revolutions were led with the power of social media.

    • I’m glad you agree Marissa. Sounds like it’s time for you to capitalize! Can’t wait to see what the future brings for you.

  5. Thanks for sharing this inspiring post to us…I really appreciate it..

    • No problem Joyce! I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  6. Where I come from, people whine to the EPA if they think the river is being polluted 😉 but you make a great point.

    • Haha! I bet it helps if there’s more than one though! 😉

  7. I was browsing Copenhagen Cycle Chic and the “power in numbers” equates to “safety” in numbers – at least when it comes to bicycling and encouraging others do to so too. So the numbers do matter!

    • That is true too! Safety and Power in Numbers, check.

  8. Inspiring post Derek. It is so true. People do have power collectively. I wish this was used for more good in this world instead of for selfish gain but that is my idealism talking.

    • There is so much power in numbers it’s crazy! If you could capture just 1% of the U.S. population, you’d never have to work another day in your life!

  9. Although the power comes with the numbers it does take individual action to start anything!

Very true words in this post. I don’t have any new ideas right now asides from just spreading my wings, the people who think up the original ideas will get the most gain though 🙂

    • Yep, those that have an original idea that capture the attention of many will certainly benefit the most. You never know, it could be you! 🙂

  10. One person can say something and try to make a difference but it is so much easier to get to where you want to go when you work in numbers.

    • You’ve got that right!

  11. I’ve found it interesting to see how people are willing to take a few moments to help others… it’s inspiring. It reminds me that there are those who think of the one or two that aren’t naturally apart of the larger numbers!

    • That’s a good point too Doctor Stock. It is inspiring isn’t it?

  12. There is definitely power in numbers, and your application of this thought to websites is perfect!

    • I’m glad you appreciated that Christa. I look at some blogs that had 100,000 subscribers and sold them for over $1,000,000! I bet I can do that too! Just give me a few years and presto, $1 mil (I hope it’s that simple anyway). 🙂
