Monthly Earnings Report: February 2012

Do you ever wonder how much money this site makes per month? How does it generate the income? Where does it come from? All your questions will be answered in this post.

As expected, these earnings reports have been a big hit (I started doing this in April, 2011). Not only is it of great interest for my blogging friends, but I also believe that my readers have a right to know how this site is being funded. So, with no further ado, here’s the earnings report for February, 2012.

February 2012 Earnings Report

Breakdown of the Earnings: February 2012

Adsense – $93.19

Staff Writing – $142.81

Link Ads/Widgets – $2,138.86

Sponsored Posts – $1053.00

Affiliate Sales – $105

Online Money Bloggers Site: $310.82

Total February 2012 Income – $3,843.68!

I was a little shocked at the income level from Adsense this past month. I expected to hit the high $60s, but never did I expect to get so close to $100! My site, Creating a Passive Income contributed a little, but only about $7.69 worth.

I’m quite uncertain about what will come of my Adsense earnings in the future months. Was this just a fluke? Or, is this something that will be sustainable and continue to grow as my site continues to gain readership? We’ll just have to wait and see. I wouldn’t be surprised if earnings hovered around $70 next month though.

Staff Writing

I wrote 6 articles for other sites and earned $142.81, which is an average of $23.80 per post. That’s not too bad considering it only takes about 40 minutes to write a solid article. This income should stay fairly consistent from month to month.

Link Ads/Widgets

I had an unbelievable month of link ads and widgets in February! I made a point to reach out to my advertisers and let them know that I was looking for high-quality links from my homepage, and boy did they respond! In the month of February, I sold 9 link/widget slots (varying from a 3 month term up to a full 1 year term) for a total of $2,138.86.

This income is certainly not sustainable since I can’t just load up 100 link ads on my sidebar page. I’ll have to limit these offers in the near future and continue to direct my focus toward affiliate links. But, in order to bring in some consistent revenue, I’ll need to continue to increase the number of eyeballs that are landing on my page each month.

Sponsored Posts

This category was pretty slow in the previous couple of months, but February definitely made up for it. I hosted 7 posts for $1,053. This also is not sustainable and depends purely on advertisers reaching out to me through my “Contact/Advertise” tab. I hope to see this revenue again in March, but there is definitely no guarantee.

Affiliate Sales

I’m always excited when I make an affiliate sale because it’s entirely passive (I don’t have to spend the time to put up a post or a home-page link – readers just click on a link and make an order, and I am paid the royalties).

I often refer my new bloggers to iPage because they have treated me quite well throughout the entire span of this website. Whenever a reader clicks on the link and creates a new site, I earn $105. It’s good money, and I believe that iPage is a great web-host, so it’s really a win-win.

In February, I made one sale and was paid $105.

Online Money Bloggers Income

Corey and I reached out for some ad deals in February and were able to make some deals for side-bar homepage links. My cut of the deals was $310.82.

Recap of February, and Expectations for March

In December, I earned $798. In January, I earned $1,559. In February, I earned $3,843.68. In these past 3 months, I have seen a crazy spike in income – so what in the world should I expect for March? I’m not so ignorant that I think I’ll continue the trend and earn $5,000+, but let’s predict what might be probable based on the opportunities of my various projects.

Online Money Bloggers

My business partner and I have big plans for this site, and we know that it could be quite profitable by the end of 2012, but up until now, we really haven’t made a big push to earn an income via this project.

Our main focus will be to increase readership this month so that we can begin to promote various affiliate products (that we believe in highly). I don’t expect a huge income in March – maybe $300 in affiliate sales – but the months after that could easily break $1,000+ if we focus a little more on our SEO.

Also, we’ll continue to accept a few homepage links here and there, so for the month of March, I bet we could earn another $800+ through this medium. After expenses and the equal divide for our partnership, my cut of that will be somewhere in the realm of $450.

Creating a Passive Income

This site is really beginning to take shape. My SEO efforts are paying off, I have a PR of 3, and my mozRank just got bumped up to a 3.81. Advertisers are starting to show interest.

I bet I could reach out to my advertisers and make 4-5 ad deals for my homepage (at minimum). This could easily equate to $1,200+ in income for the month of March.

My eBook

My wife and I are currently working on the cover design and I’ll soon be pre-selling the book. I have no idea what kind of income to expect, but I’m going to take a stab in the dark and say that my earnings will be $200 in the month of March (I’m giving this a low estimate since I most likely won’t get it up for sale until the middle of the month).

Summary for March Predictions

Assuming that my main site can continue to earn an average of $1,200 or so in the future months, when I factor in the revenue from OMB ($450), Creating a Passive Income ($1,200), and my eBook ($200), I wouldn’t be surprised if I had another $3,000 month. Wish me luck! 🙂

Income Reports

My name is Derek, and I have my Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University. After graduation, I was not able to find a job that fully utilized my degree, but I still had a passion for Finance! So, I decided to focus my passion in the stock market. I studied Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and Income Statements, put some money into the market and saw a good return on my investment. As satisfying as this was, I still felt that something was missing. I have a passion for Finance, but I also have a passion for people. If you have a willingness to learn, I will continue to teach.

    • Thanks! It was an unbelievable month – I hope March is just as good!

  1. Nice work – I too am going to be focusing on other more-sustainable income as well. Money is money, but it would be nice on to have to worry whether I will be getting any money next month. 🙂

    • Yep. With my set-up, I could fluctuate quite a lot! I mean, look at the difference between December and February — $3,000!! Crazy. Hopefully it’ll be more consistent soon.

  2. INCREDIBLE! You are on a great trend, so keep up the good work! Are all your sponsored posts found through people contacting you directly?

    • It was pretty awesome this month! And yes, all of my sponsored posts were from people that contacted me through my “Contact/Advertise” tab. If you want to know more, contact me . I love to help!

  3. Holy moly, nice work Derek! Truly impressive my friend, keep it up!

It’s crazy how blogging can create a full time income, so nuts!

    • Thanks Jon! I had to try to keep up with you! 😉

Yeah, I never would have dreamed that I could make $3,800/mo. blogging. It’s insane!

  4. Awesome job! You’ve done really well with persuing all sorts of different avenues. It’s good that you’re not putting all of your eggs in one basket!

    • Thanks Julie! I can’t wait to get some eBook income too! That will add to the diversity of my income.

  5. Wow! That is a very nice chunk of change! It is great to see all your hardwork pay off. Good for you!

    • It has been a fun journey! When I first started my blog, I never thought I’d be earning $3,800! Crazy.

  6. Wow, you’re on fire! Like how you are level headed and not expecting every month like the one you had. Continued success!

    • Thanks Buck! Yeah, there’s no way I can expect to make over $3,000 each month from one website. Now that I have a stake in 4 different sites, it might be possible, but probably not by next month

  7. I think Adsense depends on the season too. I find mine is sometimes a shocker but then it goes back to shocking me but not in a good way. Congrats on the numbers.

    • Yeah, sometimes Adsense is just a mystery huh? I hope I don’t get shocked in a bad way next month….

  8. Congratulations on such an outstanding month. I was a little down in February, but figure that it is just the way it is so I will keep on chugging.

    • I was down in December, and February was a complete shock! You’ll see your shocking month soon. 🙂

  9. Great month! I also saw a huge increase in February and I am looking forward to March as well. I have some plans to increase my affiliate click through rate that should help bump up those earnings.

    • I’m still working to improve my affiliate sales too – that is the real ticket to sustainable monthly income! Keep up the awesome work at your site!

  10. That’s nice income..Thanks for posting

    • Thanks Amit! Hopefully it just keeps going up! 😉 We’ll have to see what March brings.

  11. This is wonderful news! I am more of a lurker on your site, but I am really learning a lot. I don’t have any blogs or anything like that, but your site sure does pique my interest! God bless you, and keep up the good work and inspiration!

    • Well welcome! We don’t mind lurkers at all! I’m glad you’re learning a lot, and hopefully I’ll see another comment from you soon!

  12. You are doing great! As someone just getting started I feel I could learn a lot from you on how to do all these things to make money such as sponsored posts, staff writing and links ads/widgets. It’d be interested if you’d put together a little tutorial of resources and how to build up a blog to decent success like yours. Thanks for the motivation to keep going on my own site!

    • Thanks MMTO! I’ll work on putting a post together about my bloging experience! Anything to help out a fellow blogger!

    • It was definitely a good time! March is a little slower (as expected of course), but I have some plans to gain some extra income as well!

  13. Very, very nice work! Monetization has always been one of my biggest problems, but it sounds like you have that pretty well under control. Here’s hoping you only have more success in the future; at this rate, you should have no problem reaching your $30,000 goal for the year!

    • Thanks for the well-wishes Roger! It hasn’t always been easy, but I worked hard in February. Thankfully, the numbers show it. 🙂

  14. Wow! What a month! I have just started my site so I am no where near where you are, but maybe in a year.

    • I bet you could get there! I had no idea I could generate this kind of cash with a couple of sites, but here I am! It’s entirely possible for anyone!

  15. Great month. I love seeing others make money from blogging. Who would have ever thought back in the day when the internet was just text and we were printing on dot matrix printers and had to replace the ribbon. I am new to the blogging world and haven’t made a dime yet. Hopefully someday I will be in your shoes. 🙂

    • I bet you’ll be racking in some cash soon. Just keep learning, and keep writing that awesome content! Thanks for the comment!

  16. Nicely done Derek! I remember how you started and now… wow! Look where you are! Great job! Very inspiring!

    • Thanks Aloysa! Do you remember what my site used to look like in the beginning? LOL. It was terrible!

    • Thanks Marissa! It was a lot of fun. This month is definitely slower, but I’ve got a few more tricks up my sleeve! 🙂

  17. Nice job. I just started my blog in early February and seeing this will inspire me to work harder. First I have to more to WordPress though. When I do, I will check out Ipage for hosting.

    • Sounds like a good plan! I’m glad I could be a motivation for you!
