Have you ever gambled before? Was it at a casino, or were you just playing a game of poker with the guys? I remember my first time gambling at the casino. My wife and I had recently moved to South Florida and it seemed like there were casinos everywhere! We didn’t have much money, but entering those casino doors was just so tempting!
The Penny Slots
My wife and I were both brought up in quite a strict setting and gambling was always frowned upon, but now that we were on our own, it was time to explore our surroundings and find out what this whole gambling thing was all about! Sure, I knew that the odds of winning were quite slim, but with all of the flashing lights and loud noises, it all just seemed so fun! It couldn’t hurt to lose a couple of bucks right?
In fact, my wife and I were so timid about gambling that we thought we should start small. That’s right, we went to the penny slots. We put in a crisp one dollar bill and were awarded 100 credits. Marking 5 lines at a time, our dollar was quickly depleting. Before I knew it, we were down to 40 cents and I pretty much planned on losing. But then something happened , and I’m still not quite sure what it was to this day, but we were awarded 15 automatic free spins. The machine took over and was winning a couple lines here, and a couple of lines there. When it was all over, our $1 turned into $15! 🙂
Haha, sure, it wasn’t much, but I’ve never turned multiplied my money by 15 times in a few seconds before. I quickly cashed out and my wife and I enjoyed ourselves some ice cream – compliments of the slot machine.
You Don’t Always Win
As a Finance Man, I’m well aware that I can’t always win. In fact, I must lose more often that win in order for the casino to stay alive. But, gambling can be very enticing. The next time I went to the casino, I gambled away $10 and won absolutely nothing.
If you are strapped for cash, I would highly suggest that you not gamble away whatever you have left. Chances are, you’re not going to win. But, if you’re going to treat it as a night out with some entertainment and budget for a loss, then by all means – head on over to those Blackjack tables, or maybe your game is costa bingo, or perhaps you’d rather play free gala bingo.
Do you have some gambling stories? Do you ever think back and wish that you would have just stayed away from the flashing lights?
My name is Derek, and I have my Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University. After graduation, I was not able to find a job that fully utilized my degree, but I still had a passion for Finance! So, I decided to focus my passion in the stock market. I studied Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and Income Statements, put some money into the market and saw a good return on my investment. As satisfying as this was, I still felt that something was missing. I have a passion for Finance, but I also have a passion for people. If you have a willingness to learn, I will continue to teach.
