And the Winner of the New iPad Is……..

Many of you have been on the edge of your seats the last couple of days, wondering who would be the winner of the New iPad! Well, as of last night, I have just drawn the winning name. I don’t mean to torture you (well, I might enjoy it just a little bit), but I’d rather announce the winner toward the end of this post. First, I’d like to discuss the impact of this giveaway.

My Goals

My subscriber goal for the end of April was 1,154. Well, unfortunately this didn’t happen. According to Feedburner, I only made it to 900. While it seems like I missed my goal by a long-shot, I’m actually still proud of my accomplishments. After all, at the beginning of this year, I was only at about 650 subscribers. 900 is quite a nice increase in only 4 months! Als0, I was able to increase my subscriber numbers for my secondary site from 30ish subscribers (at the beginning of the year) to 217! Now that’s pretty impressive!

This site continues to grow and keeps helping people (which is what I love the most). As long as I’m able to help, I think I’ll just keep writing. Maybe this site will be known by everyone in America in 10 years, or maybe it will be known by only 100. Either way, I’ll still offer up my help to anyone that wants it.

The Entries for this Contest

Believe it or not, there were actually 3,368 entries for this iPad. I’m pretty sure that’s the new record for this site. I feel so bad for those people that referred 10+ people and still didn’t win. Looking at the numbers though, they had a pretty good chance. 100 entry points means that they had about a 3% chance to win. That’s pretty good considering the prize is worth $500!

The Random Pick

Alright, so here’s how I picked the winner. I took all of the subscribers and put each of their names into the spreadsheet 3 times. Then I gave the appropriate entry points to those that Tweeted, +1’d, and “Liked”, and then I also gave the 5 entry points to anyone that mentioned my giveaway on their site. So, after doing all of this work (it took me about 3 hours to compile all of the information), I had my Excel sheet with 3,368 email addresses listed in a single column.

Now it was time to pick a number at random. To pick a number that was truly random, I went to and put in my minimum number of 1, and my maximum number of 3,368 and hit “Generate”. And the random number was…..317!

In line 317 is an email with the name “esoneht”! Whoever this is, you’ve won a brand new iPad! Esoneht subscribed way back in June of 2011 and actually put forth absolutely no effort to win this prize, but I do like the fact that this goes to someone that genuinely wanted to improve their financial situation, and didn’t enter for the prize.

For the rest of you that have given up hope, don’t worry, it’s not lost yet. Since “esoneht” will most likely not have a clue about the iPad, there is a chance that he/she won’t respond to my email, thinking that it’s spam. If he/she does not respond by the end of the day, Thursday (5/3/2012), then I will randomly choose a new winner.

I’ll keep you all posted! Thanks again for being such great supporters of this site! 🙂

My name is Derek, and I have my Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University. After graduation, I was not able to find a job that fully utilized my degree, but I still had a passion for Finance! So, I decided to focus my passion in the stock market. I studied Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and Income Statements, put some money into the market and saw a good return on my investment. As satisfying as this was, I still felt that something was missing. I have a passion for Finance, but I also have a passion for people. If you have a willingness to learn, I will continue to teach.

  1. Wow no effort and still won??? Where is the loyalty? Where is the dedication?

    Congrats Esoneht.

  2. Nicely written. I can say “Congratulations Esoneht” and still hope for good luck for myself *grin*

  3. Well I guess I can hope you get to draw again! Too bad for me if you get a response! ;). Thanks anyway for the fun!

  4. Great Giveaway!

  5. congratz to esoneht

  6. Well just think of all the web traffic that was generated. I’m glad you were able to see some success with this. I’m planning on a giveaway soon.

  7. Darn! Congratulations to Esoneht (while secretly hoping for a redraw). At least if there is a redraw, all of our odds go up just a little bit! 😀

  8. Congrats Esoneht!

  9. congrats to that person!

  10. Congrats to Esoneht, if they don’t respond…pick me, pick me!! I put effort in. 😉

  11. Funny how that worked out but one way of looking at it is that they were a reader even before you decided to give away an iPad so you’re rewarding people who found you earlier. Anyway, if you redraw maybe someone else with lots of entries will win!

  12. congrats lucky boy/girl

  13. Congrats! You lucky person!

  14. Congrats to Esoneht!

  15. Wow, why can’t I win an iPad, been trying since the original one came out. Congrats to the winner e(something)

  16. Wow congrats on the growth regardless of whether or not you hit your mark. It was also really cool that you screen cap’d that random number generator. I know I’m a fan of what you do here so I’m looking forward to the next subscriber push so that I can help out a little more.

  17. Wow! Congrats to Esoneht, though they may not even know they’ve won. 😉

  18. No effort and still a reward — that’s great! Congrats to Esoneht!

  19. Great giveaway, and impressive luck, esoneht! Besides being a pretty good point about ANYONE being able to win these things, it’s a nice reminder about how even doing the bare minimum gives you a shot at success. (There’s probably a blog post in there related to the absolute least possible for retirement, but I’ll leave that for later.)

  20. This is COOL! no effort for such an awesome giveaways!

  21. Congrats to Esoneht…….has no one else noticed that Esoneht is “the nose” spelled backwards?

    • Nope, I didn’t nosetice that 🙂 Interesting…

  22. Did esoneht claim their prize?

  23. Good question, any sign that esoneht found that they’ve won?

    • Never heard from her. I selected a new winner over the weekend and posted about it this morning!

  24. What a lucky individual! I never won a prize as highly as this in my entire life. has the winner gotten it already?

  25. Esoneht might have thought that it was a spam! 🙁

It’s my first time around here and your strategy for increasing number of subscribers put a smile on my face. I remembered a book entitle FREE. Companies provide free items that hook the possible client. In the end, companies still gained increase in profit.
