Goals Update #25

Do you have goals and dreams for your future? Do you have them written down? Every week, I remind myself of my goals for the month to make sure that I’m on track for hitting them. Sometimes I’m way behind the eight ball, and other times I really feel like I have a good handle on them. Either way though, my site improves and my readers have a better experience from the improvements.

Goals for June, 2012

Here’s the goals for June. I would really love to accomplish every one of these!

1) Project “Our House” – If we really buckled down and focused on this house, I bet we could get almost all of the interior projects finished by the end of this month. This will entail sanding and painting about 8 doors, painting 4-5 door trims, and finding some registers covers (15 or so) that fit the current holes in our walls.

All of the doors were sanded, but only 2 of them were painted. Also, none of the trim was painted either. We’re honestly just sick of painting and needed a break.

Instead of slapping some paint on the doors and trim, we have successfully cleaned out and rebuilt our porch, weeded and seeded the front yard, installed all of the registers, and furnished the basement!

So, while we didn’t exactly hit our goal, we still got a ton done and are excited about how close we are to finishing the interior projects of this house! 🙂 SEMI-FAIL

2) Yes, the eBook – This eBook has been a thorn in my side. Who would have thought that it would be so much work to complete an eBook? I desperately hope to finish everything this month, because I truly believe that this book could help millions of people in their quest for a degree.

So I actually sat down and put this whole book into a eBook structure. All that’s left is the cover and this book is ready for the public. Exciting! SEMI-SUCCESS

3) Make Another Additional Payment on the House – If we complete this goal, our loan will go from 11% paid off to 13%! I love to see progress; hopefully we can hit this goal once again this month!

It looks like we’re ready to make this extra payment! We didn’t follow our budget very well this month, but I received a bonus from my day job and I also got promoted, so next month will give us quite a bit more in terms of monthly earnings.

With the extra payment, our principle will come down to about $61,450, which means that after next month, our principle will go below $60,000! That will be pretty exciting – can’t wait! SUCCESS!!

I am incredibly pleased with the progress that’s been made this month. We’ve come a long ways on the house, I put quite a lot of effort into my eBook, and our home loans keeps decreasing rapidly. The month of July is going to be amazing – I can just feel it. Be ready for lot of photos of our house! 🙂

My name is Derek, and I have my Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University. After graduation, I was not able to find a job that fully utilized my degree, but I still had a passion for Finance! So, I decided to focus my passion in the stock market. I studied Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and Income Statements, put some money into the market and saw a good return on my investment. As satisfying as this was, I still felt that something was missing. I have a passion for Finance, but I also have a passion for people. If you have a willingness to learn, I will continue to teach.

  1. Congrats on the progress. I know what you mean with the house projects as I get ADD and start one then go do another before finishing the first. Oh well, I’m sure it looks good and you’ll get back to the doors soon.

    • We will get to the doors soon. I think we might actually get our baseboard trim up soon, and then the doors and painted framework will be the finishing touch to the house. 🙂 Can’t wait!

  2. Progress is progress! I started measuring small steps in addition to success. I started making progress recently and it should be celebrated too. Good Job!

    • You are right. Progress is progress. I’m very happy with what we’ve accomplished with our house projects so far, even if it wasn’t following our exact goal. It’s still helping the overall goal! 🙂

  3. I love hearing your “project our house” updates! Dave and I just put our first chunk of savings into a “home sweet home” fund. Ann Arbor is so expensive so we might end up getting a fixer-upper next year. If that’s the case, I might be seeking your expertise since you & wifey have done just about all the fix ups on your home!

    • I would love to offer you some tips if you end up getting a fixer-upper! It has been a ton of fun, but I can’t say there weren’t surprises along the way… Good luck with your search!

  4. I like following your mortgage payments, $60k in principle left is really good. In theory you can become mortgage free in less than 10 years if you put your free cashflow into it.

    • I can’t wait till I see our mortgage start with a 5! And then pretty soon it will be a 4, then a 3….haha. I think I’m getting a little excited. We should have the house paid off in the summer of 2015. 🙂

  5. Incredible progress Derek! Awesome on the house prepayments as well, those little milestones when you drop beneath a certain number are awesome! (My next milestone will be under 40k! Probably not till spring though)

    • Congrats on paying down your house as well! I can’t wait till we’re both completely out of debt!
