The DIY House Renovation is Complete! Check Out the Photos!

So believe it or not, but the DIY house renovation is complete! I’m actually not sure I believe it yet! 😉 The renovation started in August 2011, and now it is finally complete almost a year and a half later. After all of these renovations though, I absolutely love the house. With each nook and cranny, I see my handy work and it all came out better than I even expected.

The Half Bath

I’ve shown these pictures before, but it’s such a drastic change that I think it’s worth showing them again. The new half bath is a huge improvement from the original!

Old half-bath...

The new, spacious, brighter half-bath!

The Kitchen

The kitchen transformed from its old laminate squares to a fresh new white tile, as well as some new cabinet knobs and shinny appliances!

Kitchen after I tore up the plywood flooring.
Ahhh, much better!

The Front Entry

The front entry is a small space, but there was a ton to do! There were like, 3 layers of wallpaper on the wall, plus both the front door and the closet door were painted a deep red and blue that were nearly impossible to cover with white paint! Have to love the results though!

The front entry. Look at those terrible colors!

The new and improved front entry! 🙂

Living Room

The living room didn’t change too much, but after the floor was redone and it got a fresh coat of paint, it really looked amazing, so I had to include the photos!

Old living room. Outdated fireplace.
Mmmm. Love it!

Believe it or not, the stairway took a lot of work! Painting every riser, trim piece, post, and spindle sure took some time!

The old hallway/stairwell. It was pretty drab.
Fresh paint really changes things doesn't it?

The Spare Bedroom

I honestly didn’t think I would get the entire spare bedroom done this month, but with my family’s help, we had it done nearly 2 weeks ago! Take a look at this transformation. I absolutely love this room now!

What this room looked like originally
Tore down the wallpaper, ripped out the carpet, and did away with those old baseboards!
I think this might be my favorite room of the house now! 🙂

The Full Bath

The pictures don’t do this transformation justice, but this room looks 10 times better than it did when I bought it. New tile floor, new sink, new mirror, re-routed wiring to create another outlet, and an entirely new, tiled shower!

This was just plain ugly and gross.
Facelift! I especially like the new floor. 😉

What Do You Think?

So what do you think of the overall transformation? After looking through all of these pictures, I realize how incredibly happy I am with these results! I think I’m going to enjoy this house and its new feel for quite a while longer.

I have thought about taking on an additional project to fix up and rent out. What do you think? Would you like to see another renovation? 🙂

Housing Money Save Money

My name is Derek, and I have my Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University. After graduation, I was not able to find a job that fully utilized my degree, but I still had a passion for Finance! So, I decided to focus my passion in the stock market. I studied Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and Income Statements, put some money into the market and saw a good return on my investment. As satisfying as this was, I still felt that something was missing. I have a passion for Finance, but I also have a passion for people. If you have a willingness to learn, I will continue to teach.

  1. Looks great. I am sure it was a lot of work, but it sure looks like it was worth it.

    • It was a ton of work! But it is worth it now that I get to enjoy all of these beautiful rooms! 🙂

  2. Wow, it looks awesome….great job! Enjoy it!

    • Thanks Ann! I definitely will enjoy it! 🙂

  3. I don’t know how you get it all done while you’re taking classes, working full time, and managing this site! The house looks fabulous!

    • I’m not quite sure either, but I don’t watch TV, so that saves a ton of time!

  4. AMAZING!!! Great job!

    • Thanks Tim! Come on over and enjoy it sometime! You’re always welcome.

  5. Wow Derek! Awesome renovations. I remember when you started, so its so nice to see the end results. Also, my husband and I know how it feels; we renovated our master and guest bathrooms, and did a ton of work on our kitchen, diningroom, office and garage since 2009. What a difference it has made! Enjoy your new home.

    • It sure is nice to finally share the end results! Sounds like you did a ton of work yourself!

  6. It looks amazing. When it comes time to buy for myself, I know who to consult for renovations. I hope you enjoy doing home renovations for friends too. 😉 haha

    • Haha. I’d be glad to let you know my opinion if you ever buy a fixer-upper.

  7. You did a great job on the house! I know how much work is involved with these things – so way to stick with it.

    • Thanks Aaron! It took some time for sure, but it’s done! Yay! 🙂

  8. The floors look awesome. Congrats on a job well done.

    • I like the floors too! The contrast of the dark floors and the white trim is awesome!

  9. Good job… and did you stay on budget?
How much did it cost, and how much did it add to the value of your home? Or did I miss those discussions?

    • Hi Johannah. That’s a lot of questions! I don’t yet have the total cost, and I really had no budget, so I guess I’ll have to get back to you on that! It definitely increased the value of the house though! 🙂

  10. Wow!! I love looking at the before and afters…great work! The dark floor in the living is amazing!

    • Thanks for the compliments Jon! I love it too!

  11. I think you found another profession! Have you thought of getting your contractor’s license? I think it really looks good. Congratulations.

    • Ha, I am definitely NOT a contractor!

  12. It looks great! I love before and after pictures. How much do you think you have increased the home’s value with your renovations?

    • I really don’t know how much these renovations increased the house value. I guess I’ll find out if I ever try to sell it! 🙂

    • I bet! Thanks for the comment!

    • It definitely does! Now I just need to purchase some furniture so I can enjoy it! 🙂

  13. You did an awesome job! I love those dark, wood floors.

    • Thanks! I think that’s my favorite part too.

  14. When I saw the “Before” picture and read the lead-in I was expecting to see granite countertops and stainless steel appliances in the “After” picture. Was I ever happy to be wrong! You are doing an amazing renovation. I hope we get to see the “After After” pictures, too.

    • Glad you like the photos Brice! I’m assuming that you’d like to see the place furnished (is that what “after after” means?)? I suppose I could do that. But, I have to warn you. I’m no interior decorator!!

  15. Wow! Looks great! Must of saved yourself a ton of money by not hiring someone to do all that work! It sure helps to be handy around the house. 🙂

    • Hi Dara! By doing the majority of the work myself, yes, I did save a ton of money! I must confess that I did have someone do the floors though, and I’m so glad I did! He spent 30 days at my house trying to get it right! It was definitely worth the extra dough. As for everything else though, the expenses were minimal. Heck, I redid the entire bathroom for less than $600, and that included putting in a whole new floor!

  16. Looks GREAT!

    • Thanks Kevin! I just bought a new bed for the spare bedroom too, so the pictures are already outdated! 🙂 You’ll have to stop by sometime and check it out!

  17. Your place looks like brand new. You must have worked a lot on it and your efforts are paid off. Why spend money anyway when you can do it yourself, right?

    • I love doing all this handy work by myself, but it sure takes time! I did hire out the floors to be done because I knew it would take me way longer than the professionals, and I certainly wouldn’t get the same results! So, sometimes it is worth it.

    • Haha! Well you can’t have it! Thanks for the compliments though.

  18. Beautiful!

    • Thanks Marcy! Right now I’m working on filling it with furniture. I really want a baby grand piano. I think it would look so great in the living room!

  19. @Derek Great DIY work. Yes your idea is great for baby grand piano which would be look gorgeous in your living room. Also you should have to renovate bedroom with photographs which will also increase the beauty of home..

    • Thanks! Yes, I’m still trying to hunt down that baby grand piano, but it sure will look nice! And, I’ll be purchasing some bedroom furniture soon too, which will certainly look great in my newly renovated room. 🙂

  20. Wow! I am impressed! What a transformation!
    Love it!
    Great job 🙂

    • Thanks, HH!
