5 Ways Your Car Can Actually Make You Money

I relentlessly harp on how stupid it is to have an expensive car that depreciates in value (in fact, I might have even had a little tangent yesterday!). All too often our vehicles lose value and put a hurtin’ on our net worth, but what if we could actually use our car to earn us some money? Intrigued? I thought you might be. Let’s dig in.

If you have ever owned a truck in your life, you know that it’s not hard to find a person that needs help moving something. In fact, they’ll probably find you first. Do you own a van? That could work too. Find somebody that needs to move a specialty item that is too big for their car, take an hour out of your day, and earn an easy 20 bucks. Or, you could help someone move from their old house to the new house and you could earn $100 or more.

2) Drive travelers to the airport

Everybody hates driving to the airport, and they especially hate paying for parking. This can easily wind up costing them $75 if they are gone for three or four days. In order to make money with your car, befriend a few known travelers and offer to drive them to the airport for a fee (and pick them up of course). Charge $20 each way and it’s a win-win.

3) Deliver Pizzas

Okay, so this option isn’t overly glamorous, but it is a pretty easy way to earn some decent money during nights and weekends. You don’t have to quit your day job to do it, you already own the car, and you can earn $300 a week or more. If you work consistently, you could put an extra $1,000 in your bank account each month. Not too shabby!

4) Make a YouTube Video

If you are pretty handy mechanically and have some work to do on your car, why not create a YouTube video? If your videos become popular, you will start earning money from your viewers (that is, if they click some advertisements that hover around your video). There is very little risk, and it might even be fun!

5) Deliver Groceries

There are quite a few people that just can’t get out to the grocery store anymore. Since drones aren’t yet making home deliveries, you could take it upon yourself to deliver their groceries to their front door. They will definitely pay you for the groceries, but will also likely pay you a little extra for your time and effort. If you’re looking to earn a bit more, try to start your grocery delivery business within a condo community. There are probably quite a few elderly individuals that can’t get out of the house on a regular basis and would gladly pay you for your services.

So what do you think? Is it time to start earning some money with your car?

My name is Derek, and I have my Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University. After graduation, I was not able to find a job that fully utilized my degree, but I still had a passion for Finance! So, I decided to focus my passion in the stock market. I studied Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and Income Statements, put some money into the market and saw a good return on my investment. As satisfying as this was, I still felt that something was missing. I have a passion for Finance, but I also have a passion for people. If you have a willingness to learn, I will continue to teach.

  1. This is a great post – very creative!! Proof that making money is really easy – you just have to have the willpower to get out there and do it! We have incredible resources all around us.

    Thanks, Derek!!

    • You’re welcome Sarah. You’re right, there are often ways that anyone can make extra money, but you have to be willing to actually do it!

  2. I can definitely see the potential in the delivery options (people, purchases, possessions or people) but have you tried making money from YouTube video advertising? You would need to have a viral hit on your hands to justify the time and effort you’d have to put into making the video and promoting it.

    • You’re right Myles. YouTube might be a bit of a stretch for seeing some advertising dollars, but if you wouldn’t mind working on other people’s cars, then it would be a good way to spread the word about your skills!

  3. My neighbor is a widow and her husband left behind his big truck. She is using it now to make deliveries such as groceries to help her make ends meet. I was really impressed to see how she figured out how to make some extra cash with the truck. These are also good suggestions.

    • That’s awesome! It’s good to hear that some people are still using their noggins out there! Good for her!
