Top Articles of the Week and Goals Update #7

Want to read the top articles of the week that weren’t written by me? I know, it’s hard to believe that anyone other than me could write something worthy of reading (note the sarcasm), but nevertheless, below are the best articles I came across this past week. AND, I of course talk about the progress of my goals from this past week. Enjoy!

Top 3 Articles of the Week

This was a pretty decent week for new impressive articles. There were three of them that I absolutely loved and had to pass onto you! Check them out below:

Investing Your Student Loan Money – Is It Legal and Should You Do It? – by the College Investor – I never considered this when I was in college, but I didn’t consider myself a financial wizard at that point either. Instead of actually investing a portion of the loans in the market, other students have decided to take on student loan debt so that they could invest their cash into the market, which is essentially the same thing. As you may have guessed, I wouldn’t suggest it, but the article is still an interesting read.

What If I Increase my 401(k) Contribution by 1%? – by Funancials – Everyone should be investing some money into their 401(k), but what if they invested just 1% more? How much would that really impact their overall gains? I bet it’s more than you think!

The First $100,000 is the Hardest – by Punch Debt in the Face – There isn’t a whole lot of meat to this article, but it is absolutely true. It took me many years to get beyond a net worth of $100,000, but it has been skyrocketing ever since. This totally makes sense, but it doesn’t really make that first $100k any easier!

If you have the time, I would highly suggest the reads above. They’ll get your head straight when it comes to investing for your future!

My Goal Progress After Week #7

My goals are to, by the end of the year:

I can’t believe how quickly this year is slipping by! We’re already mid-way through February and I’m nowhere near hitting these goals that I’ve set for myself! Sure, I’ve got some more time, but I really need to kick it in gear soon!

Visitor Numbers

Once again, one of my articles got picked up by some major publications! The guest post, “Before You Make Your Next Purchase, Ask Yourself These 3 Questions” was featured by RockStarFinance and LifeHacker! Not surprisingly, this has really helped my visitor numbers again this week. Take a look at the rocketing rise I have had in the last few weeks! Love it!

20150214 - visitors

It’s true. Great content really does attract more visitors. This is living proof! I will continue to write amazing posts in the future, and hopefully this visitor chart will continue to rise exponentially! Woot woot! 🙂

At least my subscriber numbers are rising again, but it certainly hasn’t been easy. A few weeks ago I re-edited my “101 Ways to Make More Money” book and am hoping to set that up to entice some new subscribers and shoot this number up a little bit more. This is an official goal for me to get done by the end of this week! Subscriber numbers currently = 1,087.

Facebook Friends

Again, I really haven’t done a ton to increase my Facebook friends (I have really run out of ideas at this point). The only thing that is eeking up my friends is the quality content. But, the up direction is still certainly appreciated! Current Facebook friends = 571.

Twitter Followers

Twitter is way more powerful than I thought. In addition to adding a few more followers this past week, I think I may have secured an interview slot with a new personal finance publication. More to come on this in the future. Current Twitter followers = 1,893.

Progress Summary and This Week’s Goals

It’s great to report that all of my metrics have increased this past week! My monthly visitor number increased by over 1,000, my subscriber number inched up by 8, my Facebook friends increased by 4, and my Twitter followers are up by 15. There is clearly more work to do in all of these categories though, so what should I accomplish in the next week to spike these numbers?

  • Visitor numbers – I plan to just continue to write kick-butt content on this one
  • Subscribers – I plan to add a pop-up to subscribe when you open the page – and will include a free book for doing so
  • Facebook – I have no idea how to increase this number at this point – my goal is to research how during this week
  • Twitter – I plan to follow other personal finance writers in hopes that they’ll follow me back at this point. I also need to continue to use Hootsuite to post more Tweets throughout each day.

Any more advice for me? What do you think of my progress so far this year?

My name is Derek, and I have my Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University. After graduation, I was not able to find a job that fully utilized my degree, but I still had a passion for Finance! So, I decided to focus my passion in the stock market. I studied Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and Income Statements, put some money into the market and saw a good return on my investment. As satisfying as this was, I still felt that something was missing. I have a passion for Finance, but I also have a passion for people. If you have a willingness to learn, I will continue to teach.

  1. Derek, I had no idea it was picked up by Lifehacker as well. That’s awesome! Your numbers look impressive. Keep it up-

    • Yup! Thanks for the awesome guest post! I hope it helped your site numbers as well!
