My March 2017 Blog Income Report

This was an interesting month to say the least. I’ve earned more than any other month I’ve reported, and I’ve done it in a completely different manner. Curious yet? I know I am…and I’m wondering if I can replicate it again and again. Or, if maybe this fantastic month was just a one-time deal.

My March 2017 Blog Income Report

I fricken love this blog. I’ve learned more about money and wealth in the past six years than I have in the previous twenty-five because it. This blog keeps me thinking, keeps me growing, and keeps me teaching (which is how you really cement what you’ve learned into your thick noggin – and believe me, mine’s pretty thick).

Do you have something you want to get better at? I’d recommend blogging about it. You’ll certainly get better at whatever it is you want to improve upon, AND you can impact others while you’re doing it! There’s truly nothing like it.

The History of My Blog Income

I’ve been tracking my income since October, 2016. It’s been a little embarrassing to show (because there are so many other bloggers earning much more), but this simple monthly write-up continues to push me to get better each and every day.

blog income reportHere’s the record of my income so far:

And in March, my income rose to $1,457.14 – the highest yet!

So how did I do it? Let’s check it out.

Pay Per Click Ads

Pay per click ads are the images around my site that promote a product or service. If you find one of them interesting and want to know more, you click on the ad and I get paid (typically $0.50-$1.00 per click). I have three pay per click ad mediums on my site: Google Adsense,, and MyFinance.

Check out how each of them performed last month!

Google Adsense = $31.85

Google Adsense hasn’t been that awesome for me lately. It was $70 in January, $50 in February, and now it’s hovering down by the $30 mark. Not awesome, but also not too surprising I guess. In January, my debt snowball tool went pretty viral and brought a ton of new traffic, and that’s finally starting to settle down. I guess it’s time to build some more free tools, huh? Ads = $13.88

This ad spot slowed down a little bit too, but if someone gave me the choice between $0 and $13, you know I’d take the $13!

MyFinance = $69.41

This ad company sure knows what they’re doing. I still absolutely love it. They display quality articles after each of my posts, and also financial solutions within some of them, and I get paid quite well for the clicks. I love it!

Want to add the MyFinance ad block to your site? Let me know and I’ll connect you to them directly!

Affiliate Marketing

There are blogs out there that earn hundreds of thousands of dollars each month (achhmmmm Michelle from Making Sense of Cents). They do this largely by referring readers to products that pay them a kick-back at no additional cost to the readers. These kick-backs are known simply as affiliate sales.

So how is it that some bloggers earn so much just through this method of referrals?

  1. Their readers trust their recommendations
  2. Their writing is interesting enough to attract a TON of eyeballs

I’m getting there. It’s a bit slow, but I’m for sure moving in the right direction!

Check out my affiliate earnings below!

iPage Affiliate Income = $0.00

Since sign-ups can fluctuate pretty severely from month to month, I decided to also track clicks through my affiliate iPage link.

  • October – 142 clicks, $105.00
  • November – 126 clicks, $0.00
  • December – 158 clicks, $210.00
  • January – 176 clicks, $0.00 (well, $65 with a BlueHost conversion)
  • February – 193 clicks, $0.00
  • March — 233 clicks, $0.00

The clicks are definitely trending up, but nobody’s committing and actually signing up! For just $24, is the decision really that tough? I think I need to work on this…

Motif Investing Affiliate Income = $92.00

Motif Investing is quickly becoming my favorite investing company. They’ve got the lowest fees out there, they’re reputable, and the site is super easy to navigate. What’s not to like about all this?

I purchased a silver motif almost a year ago now as a hedge against the overall stock market. It’s always fun to see the market tank during the day and then watch my silver investments skyrocket. 🙂

Since I liked Motif so much, I decided, “Why not become an affiliate?” After all, I’m basically promoting them to all my friends all the time anyway. I may as well get paid a little bit for my recommendations.

This past month, two smart individuals signed up to started investing on their own. Well done you two!

Personal Capital = $0

I can’t believe no one’s jumping on this tool. It’s free, helpful, and it could very well save your financial future. What more could a person want? You’ve heard of right? Well this is Mint on steroids, especially when it comes to tracking your investments.

I’m making a note to write more about this opportunity in the future. It really is an awesome tool that I believe everyone should be using.

Writing/Speaking = $1,000

It finally happened. I was officially hired to speak last month and it. was. awesome!

I was confident, I had a great story to share, and the audience ate it up. Many of them now want to get out of debt, live on less, and invest for their future. It was awesome!

If I could get paid to speak like this every day, I would drop everything and start this new career for sure.

I already have another gig lined up for this month, so that should be another good pay day.

Direct Ads = $250

My goal is to keep the number of direct ads to a minimum on this site. This is better for you, the reader, and it’s also best for the long-term growth of this site. The less spammy it is, the more people will want to visit, and the more likely it is that this site earns more money.

So, this past month I only accepted two sponsored posts at $125 each. They were high-quality and did not detract from the overall message of this site at all. It was definitely another win-win month with direct ads!

Total Website Earnings

In total, this blog earned $1,457.14 in March of 2017.

Most of that money came from speaking, which some would argue wasn’t actually earned by the website. But, without this site I never would have generated the interest from the company that hired me! Stay tuned for more speaking events in the future. Hopefully many more to come!

The Future of This Site

You know how you earn more money? You serve more people. If I want to earn more with this blog, I need to help more people achieve their goals and dreams.

This means:

  • More freebie tools to help you win with your budget (I added one more this past month — check out my Free Tools Page to test it out!)
  • Giveaways – I’m thinking about T-shirts, what do you think? (Seriously! Tell me!)
  • More helpful articles

Be sure to tell your friends about Life And My Finances, because there are some great things to come!

Thanks Friends! Can’t wait to share what I accomplish next month!

Income Reports

My name is Derek, and I have my Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University. After graduation, I was not able to find a job that fully utilized my degree, but I still had a passion for Finance! So, I decided to focus my passion in the stock market. I studied Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and Income Statements, put some money into the market and saw a good return on my investment. As satisfying as this was, I still felt that something was missing. I have a passion for Finance, but I also have a passion for people. If you have a willingness to learn, I will continue to teach.

  1. Awesome work!! $1,000 is a fantastic pay day for speaking.

Merchandise is an avenue I’m interested in going down. You can make T-Shirts for $1-2 dollars and sell for $10 making a pretty good profit. I know a friend who has been making and selling T-Shirts for the past 8 years – let me know if you want t chat with him.

    • It was actually 2 speaking gigs, but still some pretty good pay IMO.

Thanks for the potential connection, Erik! I have a bro-in-law that does shirts (he actually screen-prints in his basement) – I just never know what to put on them. I may need some marketing help in the near-future. 😉
