I stared excitedly at my computer screen, paused for a moment (just to be sure), and then *click*!!
I officially took the plunge.
On August 27th, 2010, I became a website owner – and quite honestly, it changed my life forever.
5 Reasons I Started This Blog (And Why You Should Start One Too!)
So what made me hop online that day, find a web-host provider, and get started with my very own website? I make it sound incredibly spontaneous, but quite honestly, I had been contemplating this moment for many months.
- Was it a wise thing for me to do?
- Would anyone actually read the stuff I put out there online (you know, besides my sister and grandma..?)
- Could I really make money blogging like so many other sites claimed to do?
- Would I be willing to put in the time that it takes to build up a well-known site?
So ultimately, what was it that pushed me over the edge? Why did I start this site in the first place? As I stated before, there are 5 reasons I started this blog, and I hope they inspire you to start your own blog too!
I fricken love personal finance. I love the mathematics, the logic, and the problem solving aspect of it all. Making money, saving money, and ultimately using the majority of what’s saved for good. What’s not to like?
I’ve been without money and I’ve also had quite a lot of money. I don’t know about you, but I enjoy the latter…and I just can’t stop talking about it! And…since it’s a faux pas to talk about money with friends, family, and co-workers, I decided to take my passion online for all to see! If they didn’t want to know anything about it, fine, don’t read my blog. But if you want to know all about it, read away and enjoy my open book! 🙂
What is your passion? What is it that you just can’t stop talking about? Maybe you should start blogging about it!
When I was 16, the Internet was still a baby, and I remember thinking to myself, “There must be a way to capitalize on this! How can I make money online?”
Unfortunately, the answer didn’t come to me then (if it did, I may have sold my site for millions like all the other early personal finance bloggers), but it did come to me 9 years later when I caught wind of bloggers somehow making money online (it still just seemed so foreign to me). And it wasn’t just pennies either – it was thousands of dollars!
I had no idea what I was doing, but making just $1,000 a month sounded pretty appealing to me! And earning that kind of money for doing something that I loved anyway?? Sign me up!
Have you heard the rumors? There are thousands of dollars to be made…just with blogging! It’s insane! Choose from one of these topics, and the chances of earning those thousands of dollars will improve dramatically.
3) A Better Future
Extra money isn’t just great for buying better cars and bigger boats (why do people buy stupid stuff with unexpected money..? This might just be another blog post in the making…), it can ultimately buy a better future!
Did you know that the average millionaire has 7 sources of income? Well I had…one. I knew way back then that if I wanted to have options in life, I was going to have to make more money so that my money could make more money! I wanted a stress free life with no debt, solid investments, and the ability to retire early and do whatever the heck I wanted.
Thanks to my blog, I’ve earned over $100,000 in extra money, which has allowed me to invest and earn more money (just like I thought I could way back when!). Heck, I could be retired in a few years if I wanted!
What does a better future mean for you? Would you like to retire early? Maybe you’d like to be a stay-at-home parent? Starting a blog that earns money can really open doors – both for doing what you love and for future money-making opportunities!
4) Help Others
Today, I have a healthy income and we have no debt (no, not even a mortgage), so why the heck do I keep up with this blogging thing? Do I really need to keep it going for the money?
So why do I put in an extra 10-15 hours a week to write for the blog?
The short answer: because I really like helping others.
About once a week, I get an email from a reader that I never even knew existed, and they tell me that this blog absolutely changed their life. Something I said really clicked with them, and today they’re nearly out of debt, their income is up, and they’ve never been happier.
Helping others is one of the best drugs out there, and I just can’t get enough of it.
Do you like helping others? What if you got an email from a reader that said, “I can’t thank you enough. You are so inspiring, and because of you I’m making a change in my life.” Wouldn’t that just move you? Wouldn’t that just make you want to get better and do more? It absolutely does, and let me tell you, there’s no feeling like it.
5) Low-Cost, Low Risk
In that moment 7 years ago, as I was hovering my mouse over that “Get Started” button, I suddenly realized that I was a fool not to at least try it. The entire first year of blogging was going to cost me $24… That’s it. If I didn’t like it, I just wouldn’t renew the next year. It was a simple as that.
So, I got started! And man, am I glad I did!!
Are you ready to get started with your blog? Have you been thinking about doing this for months and just haven’t taken the plunge yet? Well now is the time. Not tomorrow, not next week…now. Half the battle is just getting started. Once you take that first step, you’ll never look back!
The Best Way to Get Started
I did all the research, all the cost comparisons, and read all the customer service reviews. iPage is by far the best web-host out there. And they only cost $24… It’s who I use to host this site.
Are you ready to get started? I’m making it easy. Here’s what you do:
- Click here to go to iPage
- Follow this tutorial (that I made myself) to sign up
- Email me with any questions you have – seriously, I want to see you win (derek (at) lifeandmyfinances [dot] com)
You are going to be an online rock star. I just know it. Heck, if I can do it, you can do it! Oh, and be sure to tell me what a success you’ve become when you get there! I LOVE to hear success stories!!
My name is Derek, and I have my Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University. After graduation, I was not able to find a job that fully utilized my degree, but I still had a passion for Finance! So, I decided to focus my passion in the stock market. I studied Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and Income Statements, put some money into the market and saw a good return on my investment. As satisfying as this was, I still felt that something was missing. I have a passion for Finance, but I also have a passion for people. If you have a willingness to learn, I will continue to teach.
