How Much Money Do You Make Online?

Are you capitalizing on all the latest trends? Are you making money via the Internet? Or, are you off to the factory again, working at a job that will most likely not last through the winter? Honestly, I have nothing against factory jobs. I’ve worked a few of them myself, but we now live in a world of online marketing where there seems to be no shortage of cash. Are you already up to your armpits in hundred dollar bills? Or are you afraid to take a chance, and ignore the new avenue of wealth around you?

I started this website for one reason – I had quite a lot of knowledge in finance, but didn’t have a job that would utilize my skills. Basically, my wife was going crazy, because all I talked about was finance! So, I decided to redirect my love for personal finance, and so this website was born.

When I first started the site, I really didn’t have any intention of monetizing it. I just wanted to write about personal finance, and maybe help out a few people along the way! A few weeks went by, and I decided that I would put Google Adsense ads on my site to try to cover the cost of the blog. I think I made $0.03 in the first month, and I was ecstatic! I couldn’t believe that it would be possible to make money with something that I loved to do!

Pat Flynn and The Smart Passive Income Blog

It was at this point (with my 3 cent income) that I became curious about the blogging world. How much could possibly be made online through a few websites? Were people earning enough to make a living without a regular job? In one of my initial searches, I stumbled upon Pat Flynn’s blog, “The Smart Passive Income Blog“.

Pat is a very straight-forward guy. He works hard (you can tell by his various web projects), tells you everything he’s doing, and he’ll tell you how much money he makes each month (my favorite part)!

Pat started his website in 2008 when he lost his full-time job. He thought maybe he could make enough to survive, but now he far surpasses survival… in April or 2011, Pat earned $41,000 (yes, in a single month). Of course, not all of this is from a single website, but this really shows you what is possible!

His earnings have come from his main site (mainly via affiliate marketing), a couple of niche sites, and a couple of iPhone apps. That’s basically it.

After viewing his earnings, I naturally think to myself, “I can do that!” And why can’t I? Why can’t you!?

My Progress

While my goal of this site is not to make a million bucks, the extra income definitely allows me to help my readers with more helpful tools and freebie giveaways.

The monetary income is also a great way for me to measure how popular my site is becoming. I want to make sure that I continually make improvements and grow this site’s popularity. After all, I want to help as many people become financially independant as I can!

So, starting very soon, I plan on displaying my monthly income reports. You, my readers, deserve to know how this site is making money, and also, I’m hoping that it will inspire you to make some online money of your own!

Do you like the idea of me sharing my online income? Do you think it will inspire you to make some online money yourself? Please, let me know your thoughts.

Money Passive Income

My name is Derek, and I have my Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University. After graduation, I was not able to find a job that fully utilized my degree, but I still had a passion for Finance! So, I decided to focus my passion in the stock market. I studied Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and Income Statements, put some money into the market and saw a good return on my investment. As satisfying as this was, I still felt that something was missing. I have a passion for Finance, but I also have a passion for people. If you have a willingness to learn, I will continue to teach.

  1. Look forward to seeing the income reports. Monetizing the blog is something I haven’t gotten around to doing yet.

    • Since I’ve been around for less than a year, I’m not making a ton, but it’s definitely more than I expected! Especially so soon.

  2. I enjoy your blog. It encourages me to stay on top of my finances. And I have appreciated the tips on earning extra income.

  3. Yes, I think that would be interesting and informative!

  4. Totally on board with the passive income stream. I think that the idea of showing monthly income reports is great!

    • Can’t wait to share with all of you! I think I’ll post this on Saturday, and then the 1st Saturday after each month (this will be a monthly report).

  5. I’ve been online professionally for 8 years. Business is good, and I’m making enough to pay for college right now, and living expenses plus putting a little away for the future. I pay myself a salary, the rest is reinvested.

I’m looking forward to seeing what I can do when I’m not spending 19 hours in the classroom each week–can’t wait to graduate and put this thing on full tilt!

You should consider opening up your finances, it seems like people love to keep track on other blogs. I won’t ever do it, I don’t think, but I like to read other people’s updates and would surely check in for yours, too!

    • Sounds like you’re doing amazing for yourself! Keep up the good work and you most likely won’t even need to look for a job when you graduate! 🙂 I think I’m getting a little jealous…

  6. I came into blogging cause I was bored, and now I love it. Maybe I’ve been a little quick to monetize it, but making .15 a month isn’t discouraging me.

    • The cash certainly doesn’t come fast, but it will come. Just focus on providing quality content to your readers and it will all come together.

  7. I’ve always wanted to start a blog and get Google Adsense ads on the site, but haven’t found enough information (or made time to find the information possibly) to figure out how to get it done. More information…please? Is there a website the lays it out or how did you get it to work? It must not have been too hard (which is what I like.)

    • If you are familiar with your site (and how to copy/paste html coding), it is pretty simple. You just go to the Google Adsense page, sign up (if you don’t have an account), and it will take you through all the steps to set up your own personalized Adsense box.

Once you are finished, it will provide you with an html code, and you just have to copy/paste it into your website! If you use wordpress, you’ll just add a blank text widget to the page where you want to add it, and then paste the coding in. And you’re done! I’m sure you could find something on YouTube if you want a visual.

  8. I was also wondering what the update was on your e-book? When is it coming out? I signed up for your site just before May 1 and never got an e-mail saying the book was out! Let me know!

    • I’m sorry! I did send them all out. I send you the link right away!

  9. Woot! Income report! You know I post my updates, and I really love seeing others!

    • Haha! Yep, I love checking yours out. It’s always inspiring! Mine is not going to be as impressive, but I like to think that I’m going to get there soon!

  10. In my first full month of blogging, one of my sites earned $.38 via adsense…This month I’m already at $2.78!! 🙂

The hardest part for me is going to be finding time to keep a consistent posting schedule since I basically work two jobs. I’m hoping that my monthly earnings will increase to the point where I won’t have to work the second job, but it’s going to be an uphill climb, that’s for sure.

    • Stick with it Chad! I bet you could make enough money to ditch the second job. It might take 6 months to a year, but it would be worth it! Consistency is key too – either in the posting schedule, or in the consistent solid content that you provide.

  11. That’d be great to hear your income reports! I think every one secretly enjoys hearing about blogging income! I didn’t know Pat made so much money! That’s wild!

    • I know that I really enjoy knowing what’s possible (ie. what other bloggers are making), so I figured I’d share my numbers too! 🙂

    • Last year, Pat made a little over $200,000 (his second year blogging). I’m just guessing that this year will be more like $300,000 or more. Crazy huh?

  12. $200k to $300k from blogging is impressive! I’ll have to check his site out.

As for your updates, that’s cool that you’re willing to do that. I’ll check back!

    • His site really is impressive, and he has a ton of great ideas for increasing his online income. Definitely check it out!
