How to Wow Your Employer


We live in an uncertain economic environment these days, and many people consider themselves fortunate to have work. Since employment is still a little shaky, I would suggest that you not only consider yourself grateful for the work that you have, but you should be going the extra mile to ensure that you keep that job, and maybe even get recognised by your employer as well!

What You Can Do To Wow Your Employer

For whatever reason, many people have developed a chip on their shoulder and believe that they should not work harder unless they are paid more for their work. In actuality, the mindset should be exactly the opposite – you shouldn’t expect a raise unless your employer feels that you are more valuable than what you are given in wages.

In order to get noticed by your employer (and possibly get a raise or a promotion), try a few of these recommended actions at the workplace.

  1. Take on those extra projects – If your boss wants to know if you have time to take on a new project, don’t ever turn him/her down. If you truly are crunched for time, definitely let them know that, but ultimately you should emphasize your interest in it’s completion.
  2. Take Ownership of a Task That’s Being Ignored – There are always tasks available that no one really wants to do. Perhaps there are weeds growing above the windows front of the company – why not show up on Saturday and take care of it? Or, perhaps there’s no organization at the office, volunteer to start a filing system for all of your co-workers. Not only will this get you noticed, but it will also provide you with some job security.
  3. Dress For Success – Why do so many people look like slobs at the office? If you’re looking at two men – one of them is wearing a newly pressed suit, and the other is wearing a sweatshirt, which one would it be easier to envision as a high-level manager? The one in the suit of course! Obviously, you should dress appropriately for your job, but don’t be afraid to dress up a little!
  4. Build Everyone Up – It’s so easy to stand around that coffee pot and gossip about your co-workers, but this absolutely will not get you promoted (take it too far and you might get the boot, even if it is an unfair dismissal). Change your attitude and start building up your co-workers and you’ll become the ray of sunshine that your office so desperately needs!

When you’re at the workplace, be pleasant and friendly, but at the same time, make sure that your nose is always to the grind-stone! By following the steps above, you’ll be sure to wow your employer.

  1. Dressing for success is something I’m working on right now. I’ve noticed that I’ve been dressing lazier lately and this needs to stop.

    • Yep. It definitely doesn’t help when you dress sloppily! I’d say that I outdress 90% of the people at work every day, and it feels good when I look good too!

  2. Dressing for success goes against the tenents of frugality.

    • Ha, sort of. When I say, ‘dress for success’, I don’t mean that you should spend $3,000 on an imported suit from Italy. Yes, you might need to spend $150 on a new suit, but in the long run, it will be entirely worth it.
