Another month is over, which means it’s time to report the monies!! How much did this site earn in the month of May??
Within the first few days of the month, I had some fantastic things happen:
- My article, “How Much Should You Spend on That?” went viral on Facebook and earned me 5,000-6,000 views in just one day
- I interviewed with CNBC and they wrote a fantastic article about my debt payoff story, which immediately got picked up by Yahoo! Finance. This was a BIG DEAL.
With the huge pick-up in traffic, my earnings jumped a bit as well. As a whole, I was satisfied with my earnings from last month, but I would have liked to see more of it come from affiliate sales. I think they’re coming, but it just doesn’t happen every month apparently…
My May 2017 Blog Income Report
I never get tired of this blog. I get to help people, express my feelings and opinions openly, AND I GET TO MAKE MONEY DOING IT! What could be better than that? Absolutely nothing!
Do you have some tribal knowledge that you want to share with the world (you can refinish dressers, make money flipping cars, houses, appliances, anything…)? Why not get started with your own blog today? Heck, it only costs $24 for an entire year’s subscription. What do you have to lose?
As most of you know, I highly recommend it. Here’s the link that can get you started: How to Start a Blog for Just $24 for an Entire Year
The History of My Blog Income
Ive been tracking my income since October, 2016. Ha, it started out pretty embarrassing that first month since I only made $293… But since then, I’ve averaged over $700 a month and that’s definitely nothing to sneeze at!
I’m hoping that my income continues to climb, but even if it doesn’t I’ll never stop writing! Why? Because I friggin’ love it!
Heres the record of my income so far:
- Oct 2016 Income: $293.04
- Nov 2016 Income: $589.24
- Dec 2016 Income: $1,085.98
- Jan 2017 Income: $486.76
- Feb 2017 Income: $643.34
- March 2017 Income: $1,457.14
- April 2017 Income: $752.21
And in May, my income was $1,300.20! Yeah, baby!!
So how did I do it? Lets dig into it!
Pay Per Click Ads
I have a few different pay per click ads on my website – Google Adsense, Media.net, and MyFinance. These ad placements recommend various products that are related either to the content that you’re reading, or products that you’ve looked at recently. When you click on an ad, I get paid. It’s pretty simple, and it’s a nice little money maker for this site (especially this month).
Let’s see how each of them performed last month!
Google Adsense = $61.86
With the improved traffic from my CNBC interview and “How Much Should You Spend on That?” articles, all of my Pay-per Click-ads generated more much more revenue than normal, and Google Adsense was no exception.
The month before last, I only earned $22 from my Google ads. This past month, I nearly tripled that number with an earnings of $61.86!
Media.net Ads = $34.68
This ad spot always does okay; not great, but okay. So $34.68 obviously wasn’t too bad. A couple more months like that (or more) and I’d be pretty happy. All I have to do is bring on the traffic!
MyFinance = $233.66
BOOM! This is by far the best month I’ve had with MyFinance ad placements. $233.66? Love it!
The ads are classy, helpful, and they generate an income for me. It’s a win-win for everyone, and I love it! Hopefully I can keep this up as we head into the summer months!
Want to add the MyFinance ad block to your site? Let me know and Ill connect you to them directly!
Do you realize that there are quite a few blogs out there that earn a six-figure income each year?? And there are some that even earn $100k plus per MONTH?? (achhmmmm Michelle from Making Sense of Cents).
They do this primarily by referring their readers to quality products that then pay them a kick-back for the recommendation. These kick-backs are known as affiliate sales and they are by far the best way to earn a lasting income with a website.
So how is it that some bloggers earn so much just through this method of referrals?
- Their readers trust their recommendations
- Their writing is interesting enough to attract a TON of eyeballs
Im getting there. Its a bit slow, but Im for sure moving in the right direction!
Check out my affiliate earnings below!
iPage Affiliate Income = $105.00
In March I earned $315 from my iPage affiliate sign-ups, so I’m a little disheartened that more people didn’t sign up to start their own sites in April, but this will come with time. I’m sure of it!
I believe wholeheartedly that:
- iPage is an amazing, inexpensive webhost, and
- Anyone can earn an income with their own website
So why aren’t more people starting their own websites and giving it a shot?? I have absolutely no idea. It baffles me a little. But I’m so glad to see that at least one site was started last month because of my prompting!
Since sign-ups can fluctuate pretty severely from month to month, I decided to also track clicks through my affiliate iPage link:
- October 142 clicks, $105.00
- November 126 clicks, $0.00
- December 158 clicks, $210.00
- January 176 clicks, $0.00 (well, $65 with a BlueHost conversion)
- February 193 clicks, $0.00
- March 233 clicks, $0.00
- April – 220 clicks, $315.00
- May – 313 clicks, $105.00
The click-through rates are awesome lately. I cracked the 300 click mark! BOOM!! If I keep this up in June and into July, I’ll definitely get more sign-ups (which means of course, that I get to help more people create their dreams). Love it!

Motif Investing Affiliate Income = $0.00
Motif Investing is a fantastic company, and they’re getting better every day.
In fact, they recently started catering their investments to causes that people care about – clean energy, reducing child labor, and a quality giving corporate environment (I really need to write an article about this soon…it’s in the works I promise!).
Theyve got the lowest fees out there, theyre reputable, and the site is super easy to navigate. Whats not to like about all this?
Since I liked Motif so much, I decided, Why not become an affiliate? After all, Im basically promoting them to all my friends all the time anyway. I may as well get paid a little bit for my recommendations.
I love recommending them, but unfortunately, people decided it wasn’t all that important to invest this past month. I received no sign-ups. Bummer.
I sure hope this changes in June! Don’t let this fabulous company slip through your fingers again! It’s time to invest your money!
Personal Capital = $0

Unfortunately, I had no sign-ups in May, but I still keep recommending this option to all of my friends and family.
Writing/Speaking = $0
In March, I banked $1,000 for two speaking gigs that I did for a local company. I had the time of my life, got paid a fair wage, and made a clear impact on people’s lives.
I’ll probably speak for them again in the future, but it might be a few months down the road. In the meantime, I really need to reach out to other companies in the area to see if they’re interested in my services.
Stay tuned for more on this!
Direct Ads = $865
My goal each month is to keep direct ads to a minimum. This month, with all the traffic and media recognition, I had companies lining up to post articles on my site. I bet I had 30 offers. From these, I hand-selected 6 of them that were the most helpful to my readers and added a positive value to the site in general.
They produced a nice chunk of change, but in all honesty, I want to keep this number much lower in the future (and then improve my affiliate marketing conversion rate).
Total Website Earnings
In total, this blog earned $1,300.20 in May of 2017.
A little too much of it came from direct ads, but I still made more than $400 on affiliate ads and click ads on their own, and that’s not too shabby either! In the next couple of months, I want to see that $400 turn into $1,000 and the $800 turn into $200. THAT would be the ideal scenario!

Thanks Friends! Cant wait to share what I accomplish next month!
My name is Derek, and I have my Bachelors Degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University. After graduation, I was not able to find a job that fully utilized my degree, but I still had a passion for Finance! So, I decided to focus my passion in the stock market. I studied Cash Flows, Balance Sheets, and Income Statements, put some money into the market and saw a good return on my investment. As satisfying as this was, I still felt that something was missing. I have a passion for Finance, but I also have a passion for people. If you have a willingness to learn, I will continue to teach.
