save money on a tight budgetYou should prepare yourself to be able to save money on a tight budget, just in case. Especially since many people find themselves having to live on a tight budget (unfortunately). A budget can be necessary in order to make sure you’re saving and spending to support your needs. However, when you have a tight budget to work with, saving can be pretty tough.

With this, you’ll have to make wise decisions on the things that you purchase. It may involve tweaking your budget a little bit here and there, but it is possible to save money, even if you don’t think you have the income to do it. There are still options to choose from that could help you save.

Here are some ways that you can save money on a tight budget.

10 Ways to Save Money on a Tight Budget

Saving money can help you accomplish some of the goals you may have set for yourself. However, when you are on a tight budget, saving money can seem like the hardest thing to do.

It isn’t.

Want me to prove it? Take a look at these ways to save money on a tight budget.

1) Consider Eating In

Eating out can be nice but it can become expensive…and in a hurry! In order to save money on a tight budget, eating in would be a great substitute.

  • You don’t have to go out to have a burger and fries.
  • You can make it yourself.
  • And, you can even decide what ingredients you do, or don’t want in your meal!

Eating in can be good for you in the long run. You can start grocery shopping more and save money. Plus, you don’t need to get dressed up to eat in and you decide the atmosphere of your meal.

2) Try Meatless Options

Meatless options can be a great way to save money on a tight budget. Cooking (and shopping) for a meatless meal can be simple and easy. Purchasing meat products actually takes up a hefty sum of your grocery bill. However, you can combat that by trying to substitute veggies or beans for meat.

Substitutes can be items such as:

  • Cauliflower
  • Jackfruit
  • Mushrooms
  • Seitan
  • Tofu
  • Tempeh

Those are just a few items that you can substitute for meat. Actually, fried jackfruit is a great substitute for shredded chicken or hamburger meat in a taco. You don’t have to go completely vegetarian or even become a vegan. You can start out by having meatless days of the week for dinner and work your way from there.

3) Eliminate Unnecessary Costs

Since you are already on a tight budget, this should already be something you are doing. However, there may be places in your life you can cut some costs. Check out any club memberships you’re a part of. If you know you’re not going to go regularly, cancel the membership. Save yourself the time and money.

You can also cancel any entertainment memberships you might not be using. You would be surprised how many memberships are taking money out of your account on a monthly basis that you don’t even use. You’re basically paying unnecessary money for something you’re not using and that’s money that you could be saving.

4) Negotiate New Rates

Most people are making payments on their homes and their cars. But, did you know if you keep a good payment history, you can always renegotiate your rates on those loans? Well, it is possible and can save you a lot of money. Contact your finance company and see how you can lower your rates and pay a little less.

  • Read through your contract,
  • sit down with your budget, and
  • decide what you feel you can afford just in case you have the option to choose.

The worse thing that could happen is they could keep your loan rate the same, so you have nothing to lose by trying!

5) Buy in Bulk

Buying in bulk can be great for saving on a tight budget. Think of the items you use the most. If you know you’re going to go through more of it quicker, the best option is to buy in bulk.

Try going to clubs for your bulk needs such as:

  • Sam’s Club
  • Gordon Food Service Store
  • BJ’s Wholesale Club
  • Costco

You can save money and stock up on your everyday needs.

6) Consider Different Transportation Options

Try out some different transportation options to save your money.

You can save on gas by:

  • Riding the bus
  • Bike riding
  • Walking

It can help you reduce your carbon footprint as well, so that’s a plus. Another option would be to choose ridesharing options, such as Uber or Lyft, so you still don’t have to drive.

7) Start Couponing

If you’re looking for ways to be a more thrifty shopper and save, start couponing. Yes, couponing is a huge money saver!

Couponing can help you save money on everyday items, whether you’re shopping online or in a retail store.

You can also use couponing apps like:

  • Ibotta
  • Groupon
  • RetailMeNot

There are many more and each one offers their own unique couponing options. Also, if you are looking for ways to improve your coupon experience, you can get free couponing tips for more ways to save.

8) Try Using Cash for Expenses

You can also save money on a tight budget by ditching your credit card when you’re out.

Unless it is absolutely necessary to use your debit or credit card, don’t use it while you’re out. Try using your cash instead. If you don’t normally carry cash, try going to the ATM before going out or to the grocery store. When you use cash to make payments instead of your car, you don’t have something to fall back on if you purchase too much. You are forced to use only the cash you brought so you make better purchasing decisions.

9) Tap Into Some Discounts

Start searching for discounts that you can use in order to save yourself some money.

You can save by checking for discounts on items like:

  • clothing
  • gas
  • food
  • everyday household items

Also, you can find discounts on your insurance if you do some research.
